Abstract:

For the Aharonov-Bohm effect, textbooks teach us that there is no force accompanying the effect and that one must enclose a magnetic flux interferometrically to see the effect. The purpose of this presentation is to question both ideas. The absence of force and Zeilinger's dispersivity theorem are compared to the Shelankov-Berry force, while the topological enclosure of flux is extended to a space-time topology where magnetic flux is not enclosed. In addition, such a proposed shift of understanding has consequences, through the Berry connection, for other physical systems, including a spin-magnetic field interaction, an optical AB-effect, and conical intersection.
